1. Confidentiality
2. Respect and Dignity
Interpreters hold a position of trust in their role as linguistic and cultural facilitators of
communication. Confidentiality is highly valued and essential to both parties who need to
communicate.
Interpreters will conduct themselves in all phases of the interpreting situation in a
manner that maintains the respect and integrity of the clients.
Interpreters must treat all clients equally regardless of ethnic heritage, family
associations, race, religion, cultural beliefs and practices, education level, sexual
orientation or other lifestyle choices, gender, personal and/or financial circumstance, and
age. If an interpreter feels she cannot abandon bias, s/he must recuse her/himself from
her/his position as interpreter.
